Cookie was lost... several hours of searching
produced no results. Almost out of water, with
temperatures soaring and a couple miles walk
to the vehicle... hope was fading as we returned
to the car. Restocking supplies and water, we
were prepared to spend the night out here. To
make a long story short, we found him and you
should have heard him whine with happiness...

Whitney Portal Road is paved.

Alabama Hills were named in the 1860's during
the Civil War by Southern sympathizers in honor
of the Confederate warship CSS Alabama. The
Alabama Hills Recreation Area was dedicated
in 1969 by Bureau of Land Management and
encompasses almost 30,000 acres.
