Kirch Flat Campground
As you cross the bridge near Kirch Flat
Campground, there
are dirt roads on both sides. One road takes you to Garnet
Dike
Campground and the other to Mill Flat Campground.

Near Balch Camp
Driving towards Balch Camp the scenery
looks similar
to Yosemite National Park with the canyons of domed
rock.
Continue past Balch Camp and Balch
Powerhouse, up
the North Fork Kings River to Black Rock Reservoir
and BLACK
ROCK RESERVOIR CAMPGROUND.
Deer, turtles and rattlesnakes.
Squirrels,
lizards and mountain lions. There is a mix
of wildlife, some good and some not so good.

McKinley Grove Botanical Area
McKinley Grove Botanical Area is a small
grove
of Sequoia Trees with picnic area.
There was a BEAR yesterday on Highway
198
near the north entrance to Sequoia National Park.
He was just playing around, kind of bouncing up
and down on a fallen tree. No photos cuz' we stayed
in the car.
FIRE RESTRICTIONS!!!
IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW
WHAT FIRE RESTRICTIONS ARE IN EFFECT.
Each year is more stricter and the danger increased.
Yesterday a neighboring camper built
a big, roaring
campfire, without a permit or checking fire
restrictions.
Then he went rafting down the river, campfire with
10' high flames left unattended... and when the Forest
Ranger happened upon the scene... was forced to write
a $5000 cititation. NOTE: In some states like Colorado
he would have been arrested and charged with third
degree felony arson just to have a campfire...
period.
DIRECTIONS:
From Fresno take Hwy 168 towards Mono Hot Springs.
Turn right at Tollhouse Road
Turn right on Maxon Road
Turn left on Trimmer Springs Road
Kirch Flat Campground about 30 miles
From Fresno take Hwy 180 towards Kings
Canyon
About 1 mile past Centerville turn left on Piedra Road
At Trimmer turn right on Trimmer Springs Road
Kirch Flat Campground about 30 miles
(1 mile east of Kings River Powerhouse and 3 miles
before Balch Camp.)
If you examine a map, there are several
back roads and different directions you could take. Most
roads in the Sierra Nevada Mountains are narrow and winding,
with steep upgrades. Winter months bring heavy snow and road
closures.
