Leonard Knight's Salvation Mountain could
be described with numerous phrases, from
a brilliant work of art or a toxic waste dump.
It could be a religious monument... but one
thing for sure... you will never forget.

Leonard found himself here in 1983
when his hot air balloon would fly no
more. (Started rotting at the seams and
repairs failed). Only planning to stay a
couple days, but a 100,000 gallons of
paint later, you could say it is his home.

The mountain supplies the clay, just soak
in water for a couple days, then mix with
straw, and you have the materials to build
adobe structures.

Jigsaw Puzzle of Salvation Mountain
Jigsaw Puzzle of Salvation Mountain

Bring a gallon of acrylic paint if possible.
Bright colors are the best, on this day he
needed colors to paint some flowers.
Leonard never asked for anything, but
we gave him $20 and he was so appreciative.
The car is loaded with gifts he gave us, from
the DVD, jigsaw puzzle, postcards, ect.

SLAB CITY
Slab City is just past Salvation Mountain.
An abandoned military base (Camp Dunlap
was a WW2 Marine Barracks) that has been
squatted by hippies and snowbirds. All that
is left are the concrete slabs of the buildings.
